    Deval L. Patrick

    Deval Laurdine Patrick (born July 31, 1956) is an American politician and the current Governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. On November 7, 2006, Patrick became the first African-American governor of Massachusetts, the second elected governor in the United States after Douglas Wilder of Virginia and the third in all, including P. B. S. Pinchback of Louisiana. He is currently the only African-American governor in the United States until March 17, 2008, when David Paterson of New York takes office. He took office on January 4, 2007. Before entering politics, Patrick worked as an attorney and businessman.
