Officials celebrated the opening this week of the University of Massachusetts Lowell’s $80 million Emerging Technologies and Innovation Center (ETIC), the first new academic building constructed on campus in more than three decades. The 84,000-square-foot building will be home to research in nanotechnology, molecular biology, plastics engineering and optics, as well as life sciences, energy, national security and environmental protection.

3 developers vie for Springfield, Mass., casino
Penn National Gaming, which unveiled details of an $807 million casino plan earlier in the day, MGM International and Ameristar Casinos met the Thursday 5 p.m. application deadline set by city officials, who are expected to select one proposal to put before voters.
